The Hideaway is based on a 1937 kidnapping that took place in Chicago. A man named Charles Ross was kidnapped by two men, John Seadlund and James Gray. These men kidnapped Ross at gunpoint and took him up into Minnesota where they kept him in a cabin out in the woods they called The Hideaway. He was there for two weeks while they demanded $50,000 in ransom money. The money was arranged to be delivered out in Rockford, IL. When the two kidnappers left to go retrieve the money, Ross finally had his opportunity to escape.
